COMPLETE REPORT SECTION 2: Capsule Review
Buick Rainier CXL Plus 2WD
The Rainier, which is named after a mountain in Washington or an equally well-known Northwest beer, uses the same stiff
and sturdy architecture found under the Chevy TrailBlazer and GMC Envoy (not to mention the new Isuzu Ascender). For
differentiation, the Rainier gets some specific Buick touches, notably its vertical-bar-pattern grille and front and rear
fascias. Among the Rainier's standard features are a dual-zone automatic climate-control system, rear-seat audio
controls, OnStar, and a trip computer. Available options include a Bose stereo, adjustable pedals, a six-disc CD changer,
and a DVD player with wireless remote. The Rainier's standard powertrain is GM's smooth and sophisticated Vortec 4200
inline six-cylinder, which is rated at 275 horsepower, and a four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission.
An optional 290-horsepower V-8 comes along later.
2006 Charting the Changes รข€” Buick
Buick
October 2005
Destined for downsizing as part of GM's rebuilding strategy, Buick is nevertheless adding one new model for '06, the Lucerne
(see Technical Highlight below). It's a large, front-wheel-drive sedan that replaces both the LeSabre and Park Avenue and
is the first Buick passenger car to offer a V-8—a 275-hp, 4.6-liter Northstar—in almost a decade. The LaCrosse, introduced
for '05, gets standard curtain airbags and anti-lock brakes. Another new-in-'05 model, the Terraza minivan, gets GM's new
240-hp, 3.9-liter V-6. This new pushrod engine also sports variable valve timing and will be in several GM front-wheel-drive
models. The Rainier SUV gets a new grille, and GM's StabiliTrak system is now standard. The Rendezvous's base 3.4-liter
V-6 is replaced by GM's 201-hp, 3.5-liter pushrod V-6, except on the CXL Plus, which uses a 3.6-liter V-6 VVT engine rated at
242 horsepower. Buick will also increase its bumper-to-bumper warranty to four years/50,000 miles on all 2006 models, up
from three years/36,000 miles.
Dead: Park Avenue, Century, LeSabre.
Future: Rendezvous and Rainier could be cut as part of GM's brand reorganization.
TECHNICAL HIGHLIGHT: GENERAL MOTORS
The Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTS feature a heated windshield-washer system called HotShot. Whenever the driver feels
the need, a button on the wiper control stalk can be pushed to initiate an automatic sequence whereby a small volume of
washer fluid (about 40cc) is drawn into a heating unit, brought up to about 176 degrees in 40 or so seconds, and then
sprayed onto the windshield in four sequential shots over one 90-second interval. The wipers deploy simultaneously to clean
the glass of ice, snow, and crud. The sequence repeats itself until the driver resets the switch.
