Buick has wrapped the old Regal in a
new sports wardrobe, yet maintained
its luxury essence.
To amplify the Regal’s sports-injected
performance even further,
Buick created Regal CXL Turbo and
gave it a 2.0 L ECOTEC DOHC variable
valve timing intercooled turbocharged
engine with direct cylinder
fuel injection accompanied by 220 hp
and 258 lb-ft of torque. Its dual-scroll
turbo technology generates nearly instantaneous
acceleration: 0-60 in 7.0
seconds.
Let me share with you how a Buick
engineer explained the turbo engine
to me.
“The turbo combines up to 20 psi
of potent boost through an intercooler
to help pack the cylinders with cool
air. Intake temperature is reduced by
nearly 212 degrees Fahrenheit to enhance
performance because cooler air
is denser for optimal combustion.
“Then, direct fuel injection atomizes
the fuel directly into the combustion
chamber to further cool the
charge and enable a higher compression
ratio.
“Specifically designed intake ports
generate precise airflow to produce a
thorough burn of the air/fuel mixture.
This helps Regal produce the power
of a V6 from only four cylinders.”
Admittedly, it takes a little more
than a scant remembrance from a
college science class to help me follow
the aforementioned explanation completely.
But here is what I do know.
You have a racing-inspired engine
on performance enhancers. Turbine
blades are spinning thousands of
rpms. And the smile on your face
expands nearly as fast, extending
from ear to ear.
This sports sedan provides great
fuel economy with 18 mpg in the city
and 28 mpg on the highway, slightly
better fuel mileage than the nonturbo
model.
Buick engineers have developed
something called an Interactive Drive
Control System. This feature offers
you two selectable models (Sport and
Tour) that adjust the suspension,
steering, throttle, transmission, and
stability systems in real time to personalize
your driving experience.
It continually adjusts handling,
while four-channel antilock, traction
control, and StabiliTrak Stability Control
speak to each other to optimize
the Regal’s response to every inch of
the road.
Windy or straight-arrow roads,
or back stretches that lead into the
horizon, they are no match for the
Regal. Just choose the Tour mode and
the system adjusts from a sports or
speed-sensitive steering response to a
setting that enhances the Regal’s ride
comfort, making it ideal for relaxed
long-distance cruising.
A leather-wrapped steering wheel,
power windows with driver and frontpassenger
express up/down, and
power locks with lock protection are
some of the standard features. Driver
and front-passenger seat with power
eight-way seat adjuster and power
four-way lumbar adjuster make for
a comfortable ride.
Dual-zone climate-control air conditioning
and a seven-speaker sound
system with AM/FM stereo radio
and CD player are among the topnotch
interior features that provide
an enchanting and pleasurable in-cab
atmosphere.
Buick has been making fine
automotive products for a number
of years. While the auto industry
has stalled until recently in the U.S.,
Buick has continued to sell well,
making it a world leader. In fact,
Buick is the No. 1 car sold in China,
allowing GM to remain one of
that country’s largest automaker.
While other GM brands like Pontiac
and Oldsmobile have been laid
to rest, Buick has had a domestic
resurgence.
Buick delivered a Regal that was
born in Europe and bred on the Autobahn.
Now the U.S. has that same
quality car.
The standard vehicle price is
$28,745. The vehicle I drove had additional
features like a power sunroof,
high-intensity discharge headlamps,
and a premium speaker system
which are all part of the T0 6 option
that added an additional $3,600 to
the total cost.
